Research description

AICAR (acadesine, 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside) is a nucleoside analogue and an intermediate of purine biosynthesis. It is a small molecule, not a peptide.

Inside cells it is converted to ZMP, which mimics AMP. For this reason it is widely used in laboratory research as an activator of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in studies of cellular energy sensing and metabolic signalling.
