Research description

Bacteriostatic water is sterile purified water containing 0.9 % benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of most bacteria, so a vial can be used more than once in the laboratory.

It is used as a solvent for reconstituting lyophilised peptides and as a diluent in sample preparation. It is not suitable for every compound: some peptides and cell-based assays are sensitive to benzyl alcohol.
