Research description

SS-31 (elamipretide) is a synthetic tetrapeptide, D-Arg-dimethyl-Tyr-Lys-Phe-NH2, one of the Szeto-Schiller peptides. It carries alternating aromatic and basic residues that let it concentrate in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds cardiolipin.

It is studied in laboratory research on mitochondrial membranes, cardiolipin and the production of reactive oxygen species in isolated mitochondria and cell-culture models.
